Laila Ali may be the undefeated super-middleweight boxing champion of the world and the co-host of NBC's revamped "American Gladiators," but don't expect her to run the Gauntlet against someone named Ice in red, white and blue spandex anytime soon.

"One thing about me - and I know this might sound crazy being that I'm a fighter - but I don't want to get hurt, as far as breaking an arm or a knee or something like that," Ali told reporters in a conference call Wednesday.

"There's just so much action going on [on the show], especially when you have an event where there's four gladiators on you at a time, there's just so much room to get hurt, and that's just not really my thing."

Ali and Hogan say the competition on the new version of "Gladiators," launching Jan. 6 at 9 p.m., is stronger than ever.

"We're operating at a really raised-bar level here as far as these athletes are," Hogan said. "In my own personal opinion, these gladiators are really top-notch athletes ... I think people are not only going to enjoy it, but once they see some of the events and some of the things that are going to go on, they'll respect not only the gladiators but the competitors as well."

There will be a dozen new gladiators: Crush, Fury, Hellga, Justice, Mayhem, Militia, Wolf, Venom, Toa, Titan, Stealth and Siren.

"We've got a real big gladiator called Hellga," said Hulk. "She's like the big German character, a brewmaster-type bartender, waitress type. When she comes out, she gets good crowd reaction. And on the male side, there's this guy named Wolf, and he comes out howling and he gets a good reaction ... We've got some larger-than-life characters coming at you."

Hogan joked that audiences may get to see celebrities in competition mode in the near future. "Of course we will [do a celebrity version]!" said Hogan. "We're going to see Army versus the Marines ... celebrities, the sky's the limit with this one. Action translates in any language."

Recently surfing the internet (on Stumbleupon) we found the now famous sign in an upscale New York Deli window offering a special sale on Ham for Hannukah. This of course struck us as incredibly funny since Ham is not Kosher and would not exactly be appropriate for a Hanukkah dinner.
Imagine my surprise, while visiting an Italian restaurant in a Chicago suburb. I was telling a friend about the NY Deli sign for the Hanukkah Ham, we look up and start laughing hysterically.

The fashion police are falling down on the job, so it's time to call in the real guns.

Cops in Pine Lawn, Mo., a mostly black community near St. Louis, are now charged with enforcing a ban on trousers that ride low enough to expose skin or skivvies - a hip-hop style known as "sagging."

Kids who get caught with their pants down in Pine Lawn face a $100 fine; their parents can be fined $500 and spend 90 days in jail.

All over America, grown-ups have their undies in a bundle about sagging. Similar bans have been discussed in Baltimore, Dallas, Atlanta and Wilmington, Del.

Baggy britches are outlawed in towns all over Louisiana and Florida. The Virginia General Assembly even tried to pass a state law against sagging.

Sometimes called "jailing," the trend supposedly originated in prison, where garments are loose and belts are forbidden. That association is offensive to some people; others just don't want an unobstructed view of someone's underwear (or lack thereof).

The ordinances inevitably bring out folks who are eager to defend your constitutional right to display your underpants in public.

They say the laws are a form of racial profiling because they single out a style favored by young black men - an argument not nearly as goofy as Pine Lawn's assertion that exposed boxers are stunting economic development.

It's hard to take this problem seriously, perhaps because we tend to view sagging as an invitation to a wedgie instead of a crime.

Can't we just lighten up?

In Evanston, Ill., where droopy drawers are still legal, restaurateur Hecky Powell got tired of telling teenage employees at his barbecue joint to hike up their trousers.

So he issued custom-made boxer shorts with the Hecky's logo on them, turning those conspicuous waistbands into free advertising space. The St. Louis County Economic Council might want to apply that sort of thinking to Pine Lawn's redevelopment effort.

Laws against indecent exposure are usually sufficient to prevent the display of private parts in public places, and most communities wisely leave it at that.

Do we really need laws telling young people to pull up their pants? Maybe the grown-ups should pull up their socks instead.

Not quite finished with your Christmas shopping?

Don't fret. There's still time. However, last-minute shopping is simply no excuse for giving someone an awful gift.

In an effort to help preserve your gift-giving reputation, we've put together some suggestions of what might -- or might not -- be considered a great present.

THE GOOD ........BOXERS ARE

There are plenty of ways to show friends or family that you are thinking about them during the holiday season, and spending a ton of money isn't a requirement.

Has the person expressed an interest in learning or refining a particular hobby? Look into ways to help them learn. Rochester's Community Education program offers a smorgasbord of classes at reasonable fees, including knitting, wood-carving, gardening and even soap-making. Just make sure your friend has both the desire and time to devote before enrolling.

When in doubt, letting the recipient choose his or her own gift is a safe bet. Rather than trying to guess the right size and color (which, believe it or not, is not always the same as yours), spare your friend from having to wait in line at the return counter and purchase a gift certificate.

Can't decide on just one store? Apache Mall offers gift cards that are good not only at the mall in Rochester, but all General Growth Property locations (including malls in St. Cloud, Minn., Mankato, Minn., and Eau Claire, Wis.).

We might like to think that there's no such thing as a bad present. A gift from the heart that shows loved ones we're thinking about them can't be bad, right?

As a general rule, try to stay away from anything that focuses on a person's flaws or suggests improvement. Sounds simple enough, but even something as seemingly innocuous as a trial gym membership (when the person has never expressed an interest in exercising) or a self-help book probably won't be well received.

Edible underwear might seem like a hilarious gift for an old college friend, but the humor will be quickly lost when she unwraps the box in front of her children and in-laws. Finally, despite Jim Dear winning big points with Darling in Lady and the Tramp, animals are not good gifts.

"Owning a pet is a huge responsibility," according to Paws and Claws adoption counselor Tanya Johnson. "There is a lot of prep work involved. Owning a pet should be planned, not a surprise."

What's more, even if the dog or cat seems to like you just fine, that doesn't necessarily mean it will like your friend or your friend's current pets. Giving a gift that runs the risk of maiming your friend's beloved Felix probably isn't a burden you want to bear.

AND THE UGLY ...

Nothing says Merry Christmas like a fuzzy pair of Santa Claus boxer shorts. Just make sure the only person you buy them for is yourself or the person whose unmentionables are washed in the same load of laundry as yours. The same is true for women's under-things; do not give someone a present that you never, ever want to see them wearing.

Along those same lines, while T-shirts with clever slogans might be popular among certain crowds, try to resist the urge to buy your coworker a shirt that says "I'm not short, I'm fun-sized!" Unless, of course, you enjoy the taste of salt slipped into your morning coffee.

I was kicking boxes left and right when suddenly, a swift side kick launched a white wad from the opening of my sweat pants across the fitness room. I stopped, paralyzed by confusion. When I caught my breath, I zigzagged through a obstacle course of fan kicks to retrieve the object I had just catapulted.

Underwear. It was a pair of underwear that had presumably wedged its way into my pant leg during the wash, and hid out in there, clinging to the side, while I got dressed and did the workout warm-up.

Now, a normal pair of boxers, with their bulk, would have struggled to pull off such a magic act. But these were boxer briefs. Or half boxer briefs, with all of their wear holes.

I used to tease the men in my life about their ratty boxer shorts, which had enough holes in the crotch to look like a salad colander. Elastic stretched out or tearing off. It seemed off-balance, with how much money I spent at Victoria's Secret. I feared I attracted men with unspeakably weird habits.

Then I met Eric Schwers, and I learned that this is a common problem with cheap men's underwear. Phew. The big-scale underwear companies seem to be making boxers and briefs of lower and lower quality, he says, which explains the growing popularity of men's fashion underwear.

Schwers, of Boulder, owns the men's fashion underwear and swimwear line Baskit. With the relocation of Baskit from Canada to Boulder, this city may soon become the underwear capital of the nation, Schwer's publicity folks say.

Before underwear, Schwer worked for seven years in homeland security on government classified assignments in the international drug trade, human slave trafficking and airline security. He has lived in five countries, worked with the British government and is a specialist in criminal behavior.

But he got sick of that, so he now designs underwear.

Schwer upgraded the Baskit line, now featuring 180-gram organic cotton, a two-ply waistband and a "better formed pouch." I don't want to talk about the "pouch" thing anymore, but apparently guys like it. Most importantly, the higher quality cotton (most men's underwear is made with 100-gram cotton) means it won't dissolve in the wash. So if a pair happens to sneak into your pant leg and make an surprise public appearance, you might not also want to dissolve.

Not to mention, you can get cute pinup girl pictures printed on the underwear. And pinup girls would be a great conversation starter.

The trend at Kmart is definitely toward boxers, and has been for a number of years, according to merchandise manager Joe Tripoli.
"We started out with goods that were $4.99 and we graduated up to $15 goods, like silks at $14.88," he says.

The chain also has a whole gamut of blotch prints in two-packs at $7.99. Knits, which are probably the newest at $12. Kmart ran a Father's Day ad on Father's Day and did very well. "So our boxer business is up close to 30% for the year--and moving," Tripoli says.
The boxer segment of business is probably 12% of the market and is growing by maybe a half a percent or a whole percent a year, says Paul Snyder, vice president and general manager, Hanes Underwear.
One executive at a midwestern regional discount store chain, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says the reason boxer shorts have been explosive at his operation is the success of silks, as well as novelty styles such as Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse A customer's age also determines choice, according to Mike Sherlock, vice president and general manager of underwear, Fruit of the Loom. Boxer shorts have a bimodal appeal. A high percentage of men 50 and older buy boxer shorts. And then there are the 18-to 24-year-olds. They like more of the prints and some novelties, like silks.
"If you look at people in their 30s and 40s," Sherlock says, "they perceive that boxers are something their fathers wore, so they buy briefs. And now the younger kids are perceiving briefs as something their fathers wore, so they're back to boxers."
While silk, flannel and knit boxer shorts have made inroads, the core of the boxer market is a woven 50-50 cotton/polyester or all-cotton white background garment.
Says Snyder, "It doesn't mean that dark ground boxers or tartan plaids, flannels, silks and knitted boxers aren't becoming more popular. All of those have their own niche in the segment, but none of them really dominates like the white ground boxers.
"There are fashion trends where people show parts of their boxing out underneath shorter pairs of shorts. That's helping because we make a more fashionable item to wear."
On basic boxers, Snyder says, a package of three white grounds, primarily sold in the mass market, is priced at retail in the $8 to $10 range. Novelty boxers are priced as single units anywhere between $7 and $15, depending on the fabrication. Also, there is the element of crossover buying of men's boxer shorts. A lot of women are apparently buying in the men's department. They buy boxers for their husbands or boyfriends--and for themselves, often as sleepwear and sometimes as outerwear over tights.
In addition to boxers, briefs--the men's wear mainstay--are a growth segment.
Fruit of the Loom's Sherlock says that last year the market grew by about 4 million dozen pairs of underwear and is continuing to increase. "For us, our brief business is up. Boxers were somewhat capacity constrained," he says, explaining that production is at full capacity.
Fashion briefs and boxers are the most rapidly growing segment, although sales of basic cotton garments is growing as well, says Hanes' Snyder. "But the most rapidly growing segment is fashion," Snyder says. Fashion accounts for anywhere from 18 percent to 20 percent of the market, which is an improvement over last year.
This year, Hanes introduced a new product, called Hanes Cool Comfort Brief. Its mesh fabric is meant keep men cooler and dryer.
While the overall men's underwear market was a bit soft the first half of this year, Fruit of the Loom's market share in the first five months of 1993 rose two percentage points from 35.3 percent to 37.3 percent, says Sherlock.
Kmart's Tripoli explains that this year the underwear business was rough, particularly in March and April, but extending even later. However, he foresees a change. "Father's Day as a total wasn't that good. Now we see it coming back again. I think we're going to have a great back-to-school."
Supporting the contention that men's underwear is now a fashion item is Cathy Casimiro, men's accessory buyer at Burlington Coat Factory, a national off-price chain based in Burlington, N.J. "It started with Calvin Klein," she explains. He came out with boxer shorts with prints in cotton and silks. "Silks have been very hot," she says, adding that flannels are beginning to sell for the fall.
Joe Boxer is also a hot item, Casimiro says. It's developed a strong name with novelty stuff like 8-Ball or dog prints. Best price points at Burlington are $4.95 and $6.95, anything under $10, she says.
But not everything is fashion-driven. At Rose's Stores, based in Henderson, N.C., the men's underwear business continues to be heavily driven by the commodity replacement side of the business, according to Kathy Hurley, vice president and general merchandise manager of total soft lines. "We have seen some interest in the fashion side of the men's underwear business, whether it be driven by silhouette or color, but for our customers, the high fashion end of the business--as in silk boxers--has not been successful," Hurley says. "We find our customers are still more practical in their purchases in men's underwear and it does seem to be heavily driven on a value, quality and price kind of scenario."I am sure you have noticed (how can you not?) that many men are wearing their boxer shorts as outerwear instead of underwear as they were originally intended to be worn. In many instances, pants are worn much lower, therefore, boxer shorts are becoming more of a fashion statement (or Fashion Fopa depending on your viewpoint) than ever before, especially amoung young adults.
So, if you are going to show them off, why not buy yourself a pair of boxer shorts that will make a statement about YOU. Lose the basic plaid and replace them with a pair of funky boxers listed below!
And, hey, if you are like many men that still wear their boxers as underwear, that's okay too, you can still partake in the fun!

Men's underwear is displayed in the chain's basics area--packaged and displayed on gondolas housing underwear and located adjacent to the hosiery area.
Price points? "They vary because of the nature of the commodity side of the business," she says. They are branded items and are treated on a competitive basis, "which means we recognize local competition and match their prices." Succinctly, she says, price points for men's underwear are "promotional."
In the brief business, white is just sort of holding its own, says Kmart's Tripoli. The trend is toward boxers and fashion briefs. "We have some great new packaging in fashion briefs. It's a sealed pack that keeps everything fresh. We have great new designs that are just hitting the stores."Looking at the boys market, Fruit of the Loom has started shipping its All Stars, which is its premium white brief that sells in the men's area, packed with six free baseball cards with each package. The company has picked only the top players from each major league team for a total of 66. That program, which hit the stores in July, will convert over to football in the fall. In line with Delta Galil’s corporate commitment to the environment, RealCool Cotton garments and fabrics are now treated with natural antibacterial and odor-repelling agents that significantly reduce the carbon footprint of clothing throughout its lifecycle.
With the use of two separate cotton fabric treatments which counteract both the growth of bacteria and the embedding of odors in RealCool Cotton, clothing requires less laundering and removes the need to use hot water in the laundering process.
“Clothing is typically laundered more frequently than necessary due to odors becoming lodged in the fabric,” says Esti Maoz, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Delta Galil. “The new cotton textile treatments introduced in RealCool Cotton keep clothing fresh through multiple wears, extends the life of the product and helps protect the environment.”
Research indicates that clothing is responsible for approximately 25 percent of an individual's C02 emissions – about one ton per person. Over a third of that is in the washing and drying of the garment, the rest is from crop growing, the production, manufacturing and transportation of new clothes.
By preventing the growth of bacteria, RealCool Cotton clothing requires less laundering and removes the need to use hot water in the process. However, clothing is generally laundered in order to 'freshen' it, rather than to remove stains, and the enhancements introduced in RealCool Cotton fabric make this no longer necessary. Clothing made of RealCool Cotton may be washed less often, and at more moderate and lower temperatures (30 C or less), rather than at hot temperatures (40 C or more) today.
By dramatically reducing the laundering requirements of RealCool Cotton garments, Delta Galil has extended the lifecycle of the garment and has significantly reduced its carbon footprint. For the end consumer, the effect of reducing the number and temperature of laundering cycles minimizes wear and tear as well as the consumption of electricity, water and detergent.
RealCool Cotton was introduced with tremendous excitement in 2005 as "the next generation” of cotton textiles, by integrating the familiar comfort of natural, pure cotton fibers and the hydrophilic functionality that was previously associated only with synthetically-blended performance fabrics.

Fans and fashion gurus have been arguing all week about what's hot in the underwear department - but how much do you know about the history of our most intimate clothing? RACHAEL BLETCHLY came up with a Briefs History of Pants...
The first "pants" in history were the fig-leaves donned by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. But the loincloth was the earliest real undergarment worn by humans.
Romans didn't wear pants. The closest they came was a pair of shorts or subligaculum (subligar for women), worn under a tunic.
King Tut was buried with 145 of his favorite loincloths.
Labour Mp Chris Bryant sent a picture of himself wearing only a pair of pants to a gay website in 2003 and had to apologise.
Henry Viii always padded his codpiece to make his package look bigger.
X-FRONTS - with fiddly overlapping flaps and buttons - were launched in 1910 by Coopers Inc of Kenosha, Wisconsin, who called them Kenosha Klosed Krotch Undergarment. They flopped.

The fashion police are falling down on the job. Cops in Pine Lawn, Mo., are charged with enforcing a ban on trousers that ride low enough to expose skin or skivvies — a hip-hop style known as "sagging." Kids who get caught with their pants down in Pine Lawn face a $100 fine. Their parents can be fined $500 and spend 90 days in jail.

All over America, grown-ups have their undies in a bundle about sagging. Similar bans have been discussed in Baltimore, Dallas and Atlanta. Baggy britches are outlawed in parts of Louisiana and Florida. Virginia even tried to pass a state law.

Sometimes called "jailing," the sagging trend supposedly originated in prison, where garments are loose and belts are forbidden. That association is offensive to some. Others just don't want an unobstructed view of someone's underwear.

The ordinances inevitably bring out folks who are eager to defend your constitutional right to display your underpants in public. They say the laws are a form of racial profiling because they single out a style favored by young black men — an argument not nearly as goofy as Pine Lawn's assertion that exposed boxers are stunting economic development.

With the Housing bubble burst, the stock market in turmoil, and recession looming.....our fearless leader are worried about BOXER SHORTS!!!

It's hard to take this problem seriously, perhaps because we tend to view sagging as an invitation to a wedgie instead of a crime. Can't we just lighten up? In Evanston, Ill., where droopy drawers are still legal, restaurateur Hecky Powell got tired of telling teenage employees to hike up their trousers. So he issued custom-made boxer shorts with the Hecky's logo on them, turning waistbands into advertising space.

Do we really need laws telling young people to pull up their pants? Maybe the grown-ups should pull up their socks instead.

SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- If you feel compelled to say something to a kid about the way he is dressed and the way you feel about baggy, droopy, oversized, indecent and downright ugly pants, be ready with a smart come-back of your own when he sneers, "is there a law against it?" "Yes, there is a law against it," you can say with confidence and firm conviction that you are within your rights to complain. That is, if you live in one of the growing number of states banning the exposure of underwear as the beltless pants wearers stroll malls and city streets. The laws even go so far as to say exposing the label on the boxer shorts is as far as the boys can go.
Laws are being drafted just when the styles are finally changing. The fashion statements being made by the age group favoring baggy pants are not new. At that age, kids want to be "different," recognizable to each other as cool and just when they all get with it and look alike - well, it's not cool anymore.
The pendulum is about to swing. Early Saturday evening I was driving on a main street in Brunswick, Georgia. There were still a few pedestrians window-shopping and in this predominantly African American city, it was usual that grownups and teens alike were Black.
I was stopped at a red light and noticed two young men ambling along, each wearing baggy pants and extra long tee shirts with a sports logo on the front. The one nearest the curb had pulled his shirt aside and was holding up his pants as he nonchalantly carried on his conversation.
If there were one thing you can say in favor of this style it would be to realize it is not threatening. Rest assured, the really bad guys are wearing belts. There is no way someone dressed the way these city strollers were could carry a gun, let alone reach for one. Or, hide a knife, for that matter. They couldn't grab your purse and run - and, certainly not would they be able to scale a fence without losing their, ahem, "dignity."
We may laugh at the outcome of a police arrest in Louisiana, where a young, baggy-panted car jacker who beat the driver with a brick, was able to avoid capture until his street smarts ran out. He was spotted by a policeman who called for backup. Three officers came at the suspect from different directions. He might have dodged capture again but his pants dropped to the ground and he fell to his knees.
"We literally caught him with his pants down," a local police lieutenant told reporters.
For about 40 years now, Americans are identified around the world as being the ones in blue jeans. The baggy pants are usually worn by African-American kids and came out of the music world of hip-hop and rap, led by predominantly black artists. Music-loving teens of all races want that distinctiveness and there is nothing wrong in seeking identity, togetherness, and recognition. As a matter of fact, baggy pants are not the first time something outrageous by community standards made such a strong impact. In 1942, the Zoot Suit was the favored style.
It was wartime and although I wasn't aware of how far reaching the fashion went, it was the topic of conversation everywhere. The cuffs on the wide pants were nipped in at the ankle, prompting comedians to say things like, "Did you hear about the zoot-suiter who had to butter his feet so he could slide into his pants?" We saw the fashion being worn by Duke Ellington on stage at the Paramount Theater, Sammy Davis, Jr. just starting out as opening act for Frank Sinatra at the Capital Theater, Cab Calloway - known as the Man in the Zoot Suit with the Reet Pleats." Even Al Capp, creator of "L'il Abner" put a zoot suit on one of the Yokums. We laughed at the wide-shoulders on the suit jackets, the skinny ankles below bloused-out trousers, wide-brimmed, royal blue or purple and red fedoras.
What I didn't know then but came across recently was that there was a Zoot Suit Riot in downtown Los Angeles involving some drunken sailors who came upon some innocent Mexican-Americans who had adopted the style. It was not a case of rules banning the style, as they're trying to do with baggy pants; instead, those wearing zoot suits were attacked.
One of the sailors on leave got into it and was badly injured; then, 50 sailors made their way to the center of the Mexican-American community, where the most serious rioting occurred. Police intervened, arrested the Mexican-Americans for disturbing the peace, and MPs took the sailors to the brig. In June, Los Angeles was made off-limits to all military personnel.
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt commented, "The question goes deeper than just [zoot] suits. It is a racial protest. I have been worried for a long time about the Mexican racial situation. It is a problem with roots going a long way back, and we do not always face these problems as we should."
Mrs. Roosevelt saw the problem as going a long way back. She spoke those words over 65 years ago; how far back did her thoughts go at the time? She said, "we do not always face these problems as we should." I guess she didn't want to stir up controversy in the middle of a war. After all, the roots went way back then - and further back now.
We have the platitudes all ready: "the more things change, the more they remain the same," "this too shall pass away," or, my favorite: "what's it going to matter a hundred years from today?"
This is not a case of déja vu - not even Yogi Berra's "déja vu all over again;" this is déja vu "still."
